About me

My Story

From the age of five I trained as a competitive gymnast, a passion that shaped both my childhood and my long-term love of movement. After retiring from gymnastics at fourteen, I knew I wanted to stay connected to sport and the way it can transform people’s lives. This led me to study Sport Psychology at Liverpool Hope University, followed by a Diploma in Personal Training with Special Populations.

After working as a fitness instructor for 3 years, I decided to launch my own PT business. Those years taught me invaluable communication and customer-care skills, which still form the foundation of how I work today. I genuinely love supporting my clients – helping them build strength, confidence and a healthier relationship with both their bodies and minds.

How My Career Developed

When I became a parent, the early-morning and late-evening working hours began to clash with family life. To create more balance, I qualified as an NVQ assessor, delivering apprenticeships in Fitness Instruction and Personal Training. I later trained as an Internal Verifier, ensuring tutors met the professional standards required for high-quality delivery.

These two roles – Personal Trainer and Internal Verifier – complement each other extremely well. As my children have grown older and more independent, I’ve returned my focus more fully to personal training, bringing with me years of broader industry experience.

My Life as a Personal Trainer

I’m not based in a gym; instead, I travel to my clients and train them in their homes across the Liverpool area. Session frequency varies from twice weekly to once a month, depending on needs, experience and motivation.

Home training can be incredibly effective when it’s done correctly. I encourage clients to have a simple set-up – a mat, light dumbbells, a Pilates ball and a few stretch bands. With the right guidance, this is more than enough to build strength, mobility and confidence.

When we’re not training together, clients receive short, focused workouts to follow independently, along with straightforward nutrition advice. A few well-timed healthy choices can make a noticeable difference to energy levels, recovery and results. You can’t out-train a poor diet, so good fuel is essential for both body and mind.

Progression Into Rehabilitation-Focused Training

As my knowledge and experience have grown, my practice has naturally evolved towards rehabilitation and corrective exercise. I now work with a wide range of individuals, including:

  • a client with multiple sclerosis who uses a wheelchair

  • a client with Parkinson’s disease, with sessions tailored around balance, co-ordination, strength and motor-skill training

  • people preparing for hip or knee surgery, focusing on prehabilitation to support a smoother recovery

  • clients recovering from surgery, such as a current client in his 60s rebuilding core stability after spinal surgery

In recent years I’ve seen a rise in people experiencing back and disc issues. Many come to me anxious about movement, fearful of doing further damage. A key part of my work is rebuilding confidence – helping them understand how their body moves, what it is capable of, and how safe, progressive exercise can restore both comfort and trust.

Client Testimonials

“Both of us in our 60’s now enjoy our training with Carolyn. My wife uses her training to manage her MS & I train to stay strong to support my wife. Carolyn has been everything we hoped for: professional, patient, flexible and genuinely caring. Her sessions keep Karen’s mind and body strong, helping her build confidence and maintain mobility. We couldn’t recommend her highly enough.”

“Carolyn has completely transformed the way I approach exercise. As someone who is profoundly deaf and has spinal problems, I needed a trainer who understood my needs and could tailor sessions to suit me. She’s given me independence, confidence, and the motivation to keep active through walking, Pilates and other exercises I now love. Training with her has made a huge difference to my life.”
